Confirm entry and utility instructions

The U.S. Fire Administration advises checking with the fire department before entering. Follow instructions about utilities, damaged areas and property access. Active fire, injury or immediate danger belongs with 911. Do not retrieve belongings from a restricted building merely to complete this checklist.

Make a short contact and record list

Keep the incident date, fire report reference, insurer claim contact and property manager contact in one place. Record where you can be reached and who can authorize access. Ask the insurer which notices and documents are required. The checklist organizes facts; it cannot decide coverage or reimbursements.

Prepare the restoration conversation

Describe the fire location, areas affected by smoke or water and the current entry restrictions. Ask what the assessment costs, which work the business accepts and which repairs are separate. Request written findings and preserve them before approving cleanup or rebuilding.
